THE MACU REPORT — Episode 8 — "A Quiet Night" — v2 (punch-up / finale lead-in)

_Draft 2026-05-30. Punch-up pass 2026-05-31 (writers' room). ~6-7 min. Low-simmer setup episode — the calm before the ep9→ep10 finale. Ron arc held at ~2/10 (NOT cracked). A normal-looking newscast that is secretly wiring the finale: the feed glitch, the closing moon, and the "under the static" warning are the ep10 "Please Stand By" / moon-theft long-fuse plants.

Punch-up notes (what changed vs v1):

  • CAUSALITY SPINE: segments were a playlist. Added but/therefore connective beats — Ron's "how do we define good fortune" turns the Gerald segment into a consequence of the Crater Ball "can't find the body" logic; the two read as the SAME joke on two tracks.
  • MULTI-LEVEL LAYERING (August's note): cold-open "It's never the weather" (tired-anchor / paranoia / ep10 plant); signoff "Some things know where you live. That's just the world." (button on Gerald / Ron's dread / ep10 intrusion); Walter's "We are verified" (folk wisdom → meaningless institutional endorsement).
  • BEST JOKE SERVED: Chip's "not mild" now lands on a [NOT MILD] title card (clearly built only for MILD)
    • an EAS-style emergency tone SFX, then a silent Chip stare beat (hold cue).
  • RUNNER HEIGHTENED: the Glow Plant sponsor button fires a title card AT the emergency moment ("Get inside" → "a little glow never hurt nobody"), the ad at its most absurd.
  • SPORTS got a second joke (the scoreboard-denial confident-idiot beat).
  • GERALD got one more layered dread beat ("teaching my kids a song. I don't have kids.").
  • New: SFX track (emergency tone, TV static), two title cards (NOT MILD, Glow Plant button), one b-roll (static_glitch — the ep10 visual plant), one hold cue. No new voices.

COLD OPEN — ANCHOR DESK

RON: Good evening, MACU. I'm Ron, and for once it's a quiet night. No one has declared war on us since lunch, and the sky is only the normal amount of on fire. » Ron core

WALTER: And I'm Walter. One small note before we begin: the feed's been a touch glitchy tonight. Probably the weather. Nothing to worry about. » Walter core → b-roll: static glitch (brief) [SFX: tv static blip]

RON: ...Right. The weather. I've been blaming the weather for eleven years, Walter. It has never once been the weather. » Ron core

WALTER: It's usually the weather. » Walter core

RON: Tonight: it's Crater Ball, where Sector Nine has not lost a player in three games. A word from our friend Norm at the Glow Plant. And we'll meet a local man who recently came into some good fortune. » Ron core → MACU REPORT title card

SEGMENT 1 — MACU SPORTS: CRATER BALL

RON: And now — sports! Live from the Big Hole, it's the Crater Ball semifinal, and I have been told I am too excited about this. They are correct. » Ron core → MACU SPORTS title card → b-roll: crater ball

RON: Sector Nine takes an early lead, and folks — what a season. Three games. Not a single player lost! » Ron core → b-roll: crater ball [SFX: big-band sting button]

WALTER: Ron, the other teams have lost players. » Walter core

RON: Sector Nine doesn't count those, Walter. Their rule is: it isn't a loss if you can't find the body. It's a beautiful, beautiful game. » Ron core → b-roll: crater ball

WALTER: Sector Eight lost four players to Sector Nine last week. It's on the board. » Walter core

RON: I don't recognize that board. I've never seen that board in my life. » Ron core

WALTER: It's the only board, Ron. » Walter core

RON: Speaking of good fortune — Walter, remind the people at home how we define that around here. » Ron core

AD BREAK — NORM FROM NUCLEAR

NORM: Hi, neighbors! Norm here, from the Glow Plant. Now, you may have felt Sector Four go a little warm last night — and to that I say, a little glow never hurt nobody! » Norm core → b-roll: cooling tower

NORM: The whole family's got the glow now. We don't even use the lamps. You can read by Grandma! And Grandma reads by herself, now, in the night, with her eyes closed. A little glow never hurt nobody. Come on down. » Norm core → MACU REPORT bumper

SEGMENT 2 — PERSON ON THE STREET: A LOCAL WINNER

WALTER: For our community segment, we found a local man who recently won big right here on this network. Sir — congratulations. » Walter core

GERALD: Thanks. Yeah. I won the home edition of Wheel of Misfortune. My prize was "Mr. Cricket Knows Where You Live." » Gerald core → b-roll: settlement street

WALTER: Wonderful. And how has the prize changed your life? » Walter core

GERALD: He comes Tuesdays. He's usually already inside when I get home. He's redecorated. And he uses my name now — which is strange, because I never told him my name. » Gerald core → b-roll: settlement street

GERALD: He's been teaching my kids a little song. (beat) I don't have kids. » Gerald core → b-roll: settlement street

RON: Walter, that man is being hunted by a puppet and we are calling it "good fortune." Does that not strike anyone else as— » Ron core

WALTER: Weather. » Walter core

WEATHER — CHIP PLEASANT

CHIP PLEASANT: Thanks, Ron! Big night out there — ashfall in the east, a light grease rain down south, and the moon is, uh. The moon is noticeably closer than it was this morning. » Chip Pleasant core → MACU WEATHER card → b-roll: weather map

CHIP PLEASANT: (silent — looks at his notes, looks up at the ceiling, decides not to finish that thought) » Chip Pleasant core (HOLD ~1.6s, freeze)

CHIP PLEASANT: And tonight's official condition rating is — give me a second here — » Chip Pleasant core

CHIP PLEASANT: — not mild. » Chip Pleasant core → NOT MILD title card [SFX: emergency broadcast tone]

CHIP PLEASANT: That's the first time I've ever said that, folks. I don't have a card for it. Get inside. » Chip Pleasant core → GLOW PLANT sponsor button card

CHIP PLEASANT: Anyway — back to you! » Chip Pleasant core

SIGNOFF

RON: That's our quiet night, MACU. Sector Nine is still perfect, Norm's whole family is luminous, and somewhere out there a good man is waiting for a cricket. » Ron core

RON: Some things know where you live. That's just the world now. » Ron core

RON: And one more thing. If your feed goes quiet tonight — if you hear something underneath the static — that is not the weather. You remember I said that. » Ron core → b-roll: static glitch (brief) [SFX: tv static]

WALTER: He's tired. A little glow never hurt nobody, MACU. We are verified. Good night, and good luck. » Walter core → MACU REPORT title card

Shot tally (for the generator)

Ron ×11 · Walter ×8 · Norm ×2 · Gerald ×3 · Chip Pleasant ×6 (incl. 1 hold) · b-roll ×9 (crater_ball ×3, cooling_tower, settlement_street ×3, weather_map, static_glitch ×2) · title/bumper/cards ×7 ≈ 30 cues. Voices: RON→Burgundy, WALTER→Walter, NORM→Howie, GERALD→Seth, CHIP PLEASANT→Popiel. No new clones. New graphics: MACU SPORTS card, NOT MILD card, GLOW PLANT sponsor button card (Hyperframes, B&W). Reused: MACU WEATHER card (ep7). New b-roll: static_glitch (also the ep10 "Please Stand By" visual plant). New SFX: emergency_tone (EAS-style, on the "not mild" reveal), tv_static (cold open glitch + signoff). Music: intro bed, sports_sting button (c on "not a single player lost"), outro bed.

Joke-engineering / arc checklist

  • Multi-level lines: cold-open "never been the weather" (tired anchor / paranoia / ep10 feed plant); signoff "Some things know where you live" (Gerald button / Ron's dread / ep10 intrusion-into-homes); Walter "We are verified" (folksy → hollow institutional endorsement).
  • Causality: "can't find the body" (sports) → "how we define good fortune" → Gerald's prize are the same joke on two tracks (but/therefore, not and-then).
  • Pattern-then-break: Chip's "mild" runner broken on a [NOT MILD] card; Norm's "a little glow" heightened via the Glow Plant button firing at the "get inside" emergency, and again twisted in Walter's signoff.
  • Confident-idiot: Ron denying the scoreboard exists; Chip forecasting catastrophe as a card problem.
  • Stacked-callback signoff (Sector Nine / Norm / cricket) + two-track Ron line + ep10 plants.
  • Ron arc: ~2/10. Ignored beats at the Gerald segment and the signoff. Do NOT crack — ep9 stays calm, ep10 is the blowup. Moon + static + "glitchy feed" are the long-fuse ep10 seeds.
